Madrid's markets

Two markets in Madrid are among the most beautiful in Spain: the San Miguel Market and the Market of San Antón.

The San Miguel Market is known for its wonderful food stalls and excellent but affordable tapas bars. Near the Plaza Mayor, the site his hidden by this incredible early-20th-century architecture, blending glass, iron and ceramics. Furiously animated, this is a fantastic place if you crave a snack, seated at one of the big communal tables, a glass of wine in hand.

The market of San Antón, renovated in 2002, stands on three floors in the heart of the city's bohemian district. The first level is devoted to cold meats and organic fruits and vegetables. The second sells wine and various specialties to take away. The third floor is the lovely terrace restaurant, San Antón Cocina, open for lunch. A more traditional market, San Antón, is considerably cheaper than San Miguel.
